PHOENIX – Twelve Arizona animal welfare groups, including three in metro Phoenix, are participating in the next national Empty the Shelters adoption event.

The Bissell Pet Foundation provides funding so shelters can reduce or waive adoption fees several times a year.

The next Empty the Shelters event starts Thursday and runs through May 15.

The length and scope of the special offers vary by facility.

The Arizona Animal Welfare League will waive fees on all adult pets (age 1 or older) at its main shelter in Phoenix and its adoption center at Chandler Fashion Center for the full 15 days of the event.

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control will ask adopters to name their price for dogs 6 months and older throughout the event. In addition, younger puppies will be available for $150 at the county’s shelters in Phoenix and Mesa and its PetSmart adoption center in Scottsdale.
