KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A man is facing three felony charges after he reportedly stole a bus and hit a police officer with a metal pole.

Around 6:20 a.m. on March 2, 2025, officers with the Kansas City Police Department were dispatched to an intersection on Prospect Avenue on reports of a stolen Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) bus.

When officers arrived, they saw the suspect, Shahid Pratt, sitting in the driver’s seat. No other passengers were on board, and the bus had been forced to a stop after its emergency brakes were activated.

Surveillance footage from inside the bus reportedly showed Pratt gaining entrance to the bus by forcing open the driver’s window before driving the bus away.

According to court documents, officers told Pratt multiple times to exit the bus but he did not. When they tried to open the bus doors, Pratt allegedly reached out and hit one of the uniformed officers on the arm with a metal bar, causing him “obvious pain and discomfort.”

They ultimately took Pratt into custody using “less-lethal” methods, including a taser and pepper spray.

Court documents clarified that the officer who was struck was on duty and wearing a police uniform with a visible badge. His body camera footage reportedly corroborated his account of the events.

His first court appearance was on March 3, and the next has not yet been scheduled.

Court documents state that he has “approximately 11 felony convictions to include assault, aggravated robbery, robbery, weapon offense - felon in possession, possession of controlled substances, attempted trafficking in drugs, burglary, shoplifting and probation violation.”
