The
Oklahoma high school basketball Class 2A boys state tournament continued Friday with the semifinals at
State Fair Arena . Here's a look at what happened. Pocola and Hooker high schools are separated by 450 miles geographically, but their boys basketball teams might as well have been battling in a phone booth on Friday. Not until Pocola’s Brayden Hardwick rolled a free throw over the front of the rim in the final seconds was there enough space to get comfortable. Hardwick made three free throws in the final 20 seconds as third-ranked Pocola edge second-ranked Hooker 46-42 in the Class 2A semifinals at State Fair Arena. Pocola was led by Dakotah Terrell with 16 points and Heustin Stroops had all of his 13 points in the second half to help seal the win. Pocola will face top-ranked Dale, the three-time defending 2A champions, in the title game at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at The Big House.
Boys: Dale 76, Fairland 51
Denton Forsythe spent his first two seasons at Dale watching his older brother Dayton put together one great game after another in the Big House. On Friday, the younger Forsythe showed everyone it’s his turn to do the same. “I kind of woke up having that feeling,” he said. Forsythe finished with 38 points, five rebounds and four assists as Class 2A top-ranked Dale rolled to a 76-51 win over No. 6 Fairland in the semifinals at State Fair Arena. Forsythe had a great first half, scoring 23 points. He kept that up for the remainder of the game as he and Trayden Chambers, who had 18 points and six rebounds, outscored Fairland (26-5) by themselves. The win wasn’t the only thing Forsythe got Friday. He also took control of family bragging rights. He scored one more point than Dayton, a freshman at OU, ever scored in a game at State Fair Arena. “Waking up every day, seeing my brother do what he did, has motivated me even more,” Denton Forsythe said. Forsythe entered the tournament averaging 18.5 points per game, so this kind of performance wasn’t anything new for Dale coach Jeff Edmonson. “Denton played really well,” Edmonson said. “Every time he shoots it, we think it’s going in. He’s really tough to guard. But everybody else, they did a good job playing good defense and moving the basketball.” Dale led 24-14 at the end of the first quarter and 44-33 at halftime. Although Forsythe and Chambers scored most of the points, the Pirates got multiple players involved as Maddox Caldwell and Jett Higdon each had six points and Easton Edmonson and Jaxon Womack each added four. “I thought we played pretty good,” Jeff Edmonson said. “The second quarter, we left the bucket open a few times and Fairland capitalized, and they played really good the second quarter. I thought we came out the third quarter again and had a really good quarter, really good second half.” Dale, which has won three straight titles, is now 29-2 on the season. "It's going great," Forsythe said. "Every single day, we're just trying to build up one another, get our confidence up and of course play for Championship Saturday." Dale's only losses this season were at the Tournament of Champions in December in Tulsa, where it fell to Class 4A top-ranked Weatherford 59-58 and Class 4A third-ranked Crossings Christian 62-49. The Pirates got arguably their biggest win the following month as they defeated Class 3A top-ranked Millwood 64-57. “These guys love playing together,” Edmonson said. “They play extremely hard. Even though we’ve won three, you should be at our practices, our locker room. These guys aren’t satisfied. They really want to come and get another one.”
