The Huskers were back in action for game 2 of a 3 game series against the Maryland Terrapins today looking to get, at least, the win in the series. Tomorrow’s game will determine if they sweep or not. While Nebraska was hoping to run-rule Maryland, the Terrapins took them through all 7 innings today, but the Huskers still got the win. Hannah Camenzind finally got the start today after Kylee Magee did not have a good outing against Washington in her only start that weekend. H. Camenzind last pitched on April 25th against Washington. She played 1.2 innings and allowed 4 hits and 3 runs on 9 batters faced. She also tallied 2 strikeouts. Keira Bucher got the start on the mound for Maryland. She last played on April 26th against Penn State in what looked like a shootout. from the score. She pitched 4 innings and allowed 9 hits and 10 runs. She had 3 strikeouts as well. Maryland decided to get it going early and maybe even give the Huskers a little scare with how many times they loaded the bases. Mazie MacFarlane started out with a double. Sammi Woods was up next and took a sac bunt to move MacFarlane to 3rd. Sydney Lewis also reached base on fielder’s choice, but luckily MacFarlane was tagged out at home to keep the game scoreless. The Terrapins were hot at bat to start and it doesn’t end there. Madison Runyan was walked and brought Lewis to 2nd. Sam Bean was up next and hit a single to load the bases up and put the Huskers in a little trouble. Matti Benson put Maryland on the board because of a Husker fielding error. Runyan and Lewis scored to make the score 2-0. That was all the bleeding that, thankfully, occurred though. Samantha Bland had her bat going starting with a single to get the Huskers on base. She got to second by stealing after Kuszak’s fly out. Olivia DiNardo hit an RBI single to bring Bland home and cut the Maryland lead in half. In the top of the 4th, the Huskers decided it was time for a pitching change after 3 innings of play for H. Camenzind and Maryland bats still getting hits. Magee last played on April 26th against Washington. She played 1.1 innings and gave up 2 hits and 5 runs on 12 batters faced. She only recorded 1 strikeout. The Huskers finally got their bats going again the 4th inning after 2 innings of only a few hits here and there, but no scoring. Abbie Squier was walked to start the inning and then advanced to 2nd on Bella Bacon’s sac bunt. She was also able to advance to 3rd on fielding error. Lauren Camenzind aided in getting Squier home with an unearned run on a fielding error. This play went under review, but stood. 2-2 Huskers. At the top of the order, Jordy Bahl was walked and advanced L. Camenzind to 2nd. Samantha Bland hit an RBI single to score L. Camenzind, unearned, to put the Huskers ahead 3-2. Right after, Ava Kuszak hit a 2 RBI triple to score Bland and Bahl. 5-2 Huskers. Maryland changed pitchers after this slew of Husker runs coming in. Bri Godfrey came in to pitch for Keira Bucher. Godfrey played last night, May 2nd. She only pitched 1 inning and let no hits or runs go. She had 1 strikeout. While Maryland was getting a few hits, the Husker defense was there to make sure nothing got across so they entered the bottom of the 5th still ahead by 3. Abbie Squier hit a big triple in the 5th to put her in position to score right away. Ava Bredwell was able to hit an RBI single to score Squier. 6-2 Huskers. Bredwell stole 2nd while Lauren Camenzind was walked. Jordy Bahl hit an RBI double to score Bredwell and extend the Husker lead to 5. The Huskers kept their momentum going in the bottom of the 6th with Ava Kuszak reaching on a fielding error. Hannah Camenzind hit a single to advanced Kuszak to 3rd. Abbie Squier kept her big day going with an RBI double to score Kuszak, unearned. Even though Bella Bacon flied out, she was still able to score H. Camenzind, unearned. 9-2 Huskers. They were able to hold off Maryland in the top of the 9th to win the game 9-2 and get the series win. Tomorrow, they go for the sweep. Tomorrow’s game starts at 12:00pm CT and will be on B1G Network. Tomorrow is also Senior Day for Ava Bredwell, Mckinley Malecha, and Abbie Squier.
