INDIANAPOLIS ―
Texas offensive tackle
Kelvin Banks has the potential to be an outstanding NFL guard. How many times has he played guard, including high school? "Never," Banks said recently at the
NFL Scouting Combine . "Never played guard, ever." That does not mean
some NFL teams do not project a seamless shift inside. How many of the teams that formally interviewed Banks brought up guard? "I'll say I had I think 18, maybe 19, and then I'll say out of those, I think six brought up being able to play guard," Banks said. With little doubt, the
Miami Dolphins were one of those teams. Banks explained his answer for those teams wondering. "They asked me if I was willing to play any position on the line and of course my answer was definitely yes," Banks said.
The Dolphins draft No. 13 overall and selecting an athletic tackle who can begin his career at guard and then either settle in there - think Robert Hunt - or move to tackle - think Laremy Tunsil - is ideal. If Will Campbell (LSU),
Armand Membou (Missouri) or Banks are available, the
Dolphins will seriously consider solidifying their offensive line with a great athlete. "I feel like I'm great in space," Banks said. "I can run. I'm willing to run through anybody's face who's in front of me. My approach to run blocking is just to kind of try to dominate my defender. Sometimes that kind of gets me in a bind because I get too aggressive." Texas coaches rave about Banks' smarts. "I would say my mental capacity on the field, just me being able to understand different formations, different type of schemes that the defense has to throw in," Banks said. How would Banks approach a shift to guard? "I wouldn't say it would be (too) different," Banks said. " I mean, obviously you're in a smaller box, smaller area, the contact is going to be quicker. But at the end of the day, football is football. You don't have to go out there and learn a technique and then go play."
What is Kelvin Banks' height and weight?
Kelvin Banks is 6-foot-5, 315 pounds.
Where is Kelvin Banks from?
Kelvin Banks is from Humble, Texas.
How old is Kelvin Banks?
Kelvin Banks turns 21 years old on Monday, March 10.
What are Kelvin Banks' strengths?
NFL scouts say Kelvin Banks is strong, agile and technically sound. "Banks is a thick, sturdy left tackle," says
Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network . "In pass protection, he launches out of his stance and shows the ability to sink and bend his knees. He keeps his hands inside and is patient with his punch." "Banks Jr. possesses the dynamic movement skills and the frame to play tackle, provided he continues to refine his hands and showcase better sustainability on his blocks," says
Kyle Crabbs of 33rd Team . "His athleticism is evident out of his stance and out in space, affording him a large range as a blocker. Banks Jr.’s feet are crisp and disciplined in his pass sets, building a strong foundation for his game." "Three-year starter who has gone to battle in the trenches with current and future pros," says
Lance Zierlein of NFL.com . "Banks will come into the league as an early starter but his run blocking is more pro-ready than his pass protection. He's technically sound and scrappy in the ground game, with the quickness and athleticism to get to all move blocks."
What are Kelvin Banks' weaknesses?
One of the reasons some scouts say Kelvin Banks projects as a guard is because he's only in the 26th percentile for arm length (33.5"). Banks at times over-extends and can be prone to a penalty. "Plays with a sufficient gravitational pull, but longer-armed defenders have tested him," says Crabbs. "Grip strength and sustained fit with hands is erratic, leading to blocks breaking down in close quarters." "Banks has the slide quickness to deal with speed, but he must become more proactive in attacking power rushers and long-limbed attackers to prevent them from dictating the terms," Zierlein said. "He needs to improve his anchor and hand placement but he should become a long-time NFL starter at either tackle or guard."
What is Kelvin Banks' NFL Draft projection?
Kelvin Banks is projected as a first-rounder in the next NFL draft. Jeremiah ranks Banks as the 24th-best player in the draft.
ESPN grades Banks as the 19th-best available player. In recent NFL mock drafts, Banks is the consensus 12th overall pick.
Will the Miami Dolphins draft Kelvin Banks?
The Dolphins must upgrade their offensive line and
general manager Chris Grier and coach Mike McDaniel have promised to do so. If Banks is available, Miami must strongly consider adding him to the starting line. Banks is athletic and strong, the perfect combination for Miami's zone scheme. The Dolphins must add big, mobile and tough linemen before next season. We also really like Will Campbell and Armand Membou. But if they're both gone, Banks will be heavily considered at pick 13.
