Irish music performance: The Ocean City Arts Center will present McDermott’s Handy, a traditional Irish music duo, and recognize Kathy DeAngelo as a recipient of the inaugural New Jersey Heritage Fellowship award, at 2 p.m. March 16 in the Chris Maloney Lecture Hall of the Ocean City Free Public Library, 1735 Simpson Ave. The event is free and open to the public. McDermott’s Handy members DeAngelo and Dennis Gormley, a wife-and-husband duo, have been performing traditional Irish music together in the Delaware Valley since 1979. Sarah Matthews, Melisha Anderson, Kelly Kunik and Margie Johnson will star in "If She Stood" on March 30 at the Ocean City Free Public Library. "If She Stood": The Ocean City Arts Center will present the play "If She Stood" by Ain Gordon, in celebration of Women's History Month, at 2 p.m. March 30 in the Chris Maloney Lecture Hall of the Ocean City Free Public Library, 1735 Simpson Ave. The event is free and open to the public. "If She Stood" follows Philadelphia’s first multiracial collective of female reformers at a 19th century Quaker meeting as they give birth to the Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society. Sarah Mapps Douglass, Sarah Grimke, Angelina Weld Grimké and Sarah Pugh are credited with fighting to abolish slavery and inventing the women’s rights movement. The play was commissioned by the Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia in 2013 and is being produced locally by Chase Jackson, executive director of the Ocean City Arts Center, starring Sarah Matthews of Cape May, Melisha Anderson of Whitesboro, Kelly Kunik of Ventnor and Margie Johnson of Newark. Bus trip to New York: The Ocean City Arts Center is offering a bus trip to the International Center of Photography and the Hispanic Society of America in New York. Cape May City Manager Paul Dietrich stands with Employee of the Month Jessica Gittle at this week's City Council meeting. Cape May Employee of the Month: Jessica Gittle has been named Cape May's February 2025 Employee of the Month. Gittle has worked for Cape May’s Civic Affairs and Recreation Department since 1994. She was originally hired part time to work roller skating. Since then, she has operated most of the city’s children’s programs, including Camp Cape May, Wee Play and Pelican Place. She was hired full time in 2021, taking on additional events such as weddings, parades, concerts and craft shows. “Jessica has been a tremendous asset to the department for many years,” Director Kacie Rattigan said. “Even after experiencing difficult personal matters in recent years, Jessica has persevered and continues to become a stronger individual and inspiration.” Gittle met her husband, Mark, working roller skating in 1994. She is a lifelong resident of Cape May County.

Shore Employee of the Year: Shore Medical Center has named Herminio DeLaRosa, a maintenance mechanic from Mays Landing, its Employee of the Year. DeLaRosa was honored last week in a ceremony attended by his peers and hospital staff. “Herminio DeLaRosa is an incredible employee. His work ethic is impeccable and is key to success in our efforts,” said Bob Robertson, senior director of logistics, plant operations and maintenance at Shore. “He treats the maintenance shop as if he is the owner and demonstrates his commitment to Shore Medical Center by always being the first and last person there every single day. Additionally, Herminio is working on his high-pressure boiler license in hopes of moving to an operating engineering position in the boiler room, further demonstrating his dedication to the hospital.” “My goal has always been to make sure that everyone at Shore Medical Center feels as comfortable as possible," DeLaRosa said. "In my mind, the patient always comes first. I enjoy working in this environment and being able to help others. I am so humbled to be honored as Employee of the Year.”
