RICHLAND, Wash. — A Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper will face charges following a deadly crash in Richland earlier this year.

Preston McCollam, who serves as Spokane County's Chief Criminal Deputy, told KEPR News that charges are coming against 36-year-old WSP Trooper Sarah Clasen, though he would not comment on an exact date as their prosecuting office is still actively reviewing the file.

This comes as Spokane County Prosecutor Larry Haskell is slated to retire next month. He agreed to take the case over for Benton County Prosecutor Eric Eisinger shortly after the March 1 crash that killed 20-year-old Jhoser Sanchez. Haskell stated his decision to step down would have no impact on Clasen's case progression and said the public would have more information on the matter "sooner rather than later."

Clasen was making a left turn from Highway 240 into Village Parkway in the Horn Rapids neighborhood around 7:30 p.m. when her Kia Telluride collided with Sanchez’s motorcycle.

Body camera footage obtained by KEPR News from the incident shows she told investigators she was going about 20 mph when she collided with Sanchez’s motorcycle, saying that it was Sanchez who rammed into her and was potentially speeding.

However, investigators on the scene said the damage on Clasen's vehicle signaled her SUV hit the motorcycle on the front right fender, and police also determined Sanchez was traveling 53 mph in the 55 mph designated area.

While Clasen and firefighters tried to save Sanchez’s life, he was severely injured and pronounced dead at Kadlec Regional Medical Center.

Clasen refused to answer questions about whether she had been drinking, but the investigation found Clasen had spent nearly four hours at a local bar with her husband before the crash. She told police she was heading home from picking up a pizza at the time of the crash.

Lab results obtained in April showed Clasen's blood alcohol content (BAC) at the time of the crash was 0.17%, more than twice the legal limit.

While Clasen was arrested after the crash, she has not been charged in the three months since.

Clasen, a 13-year veteran with the Washington State Patrol, served as a public information officer for the region between Yakima and Walla Walla.

She remains on administrative leave from WSP.
