With a remarkable story of struggle and triumph, Starr's legacy will surely carry on for generations.

The oldest Holocaust survivor in Colorado, Fanny Starr, died at the age of 98, on October 30, 2020.

Starr was born in Poland in 1922. After World War II began, she spent time at multiple concentration camps, ultimately ending up at Auschwitz, where she encountered the infamous Dr. Mengele. He pronounced her healthy enough to work, so she was escorted off to a warehouse, while much of her family was taken to the gas chambers.

After living through such an unspeakable tragedy, Starr met her husband Zesa Starr in a displaced person’s camp after the war. Eventually, they moved to Denver and had three children.

Throughout her life, Starr was truly a bold survivor who wouldn't remain silent. She spoke at numerous schools and universities to share her story. She was said to have "a sense of radiance still alive within her."

According to a GoFundMe set up by her daughter to raise money for medical bills, Starr suffered a stroke on October 3. She stayed in the ICU for three weeks before ultimately being dismissed to hospice care.

"Fanny's kindness was amazing; every Friday before Shabbat, we put together food packages for the homeless," her daughter wrote. "I would drive with my mom to feed and bless the recipient of our package from the heart. Our COVID mission was a risk, but everybody needs to eat, and we fed many during quarantine. As a Holocaust survivor, Fanny knew what hunger was, and would say, 'Every soul has a right to food and water.'"

Contributions can be made in her memory to BMH/BJ Congregation or the Holocaust Museum. A private service is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, at 11 a.m. There will be a public livestream of the service on Feldman Mortuary’s YouTube Channel.
