As Chicagoans, we have a running joke that we all collectively hibernate until the summer months. Yet, as soon as Memorial Day weekend hits, we’re all out and about as much as possible. The Windy City comes alive during the warm weather season, and I’m a firm believer that nothing beats a Chicago summer. No need to jump on a plane to reach a sandy beach; we have it all with our very own Great Lake. One of the absolute best ways to experience summertime Chi is taking a hike on the 18.5-mile Chicago Lakefront Trail and ending your day with a swim at Ardmore Hollywood Beach in the Uptown neighborhood. The beauty of the Chicago Lakefront Trail is that it's easy to join from nearly anywhere on the city’s east side. While the trail can be completed in any direction, the route we’re discussing here suggests beginning your hike at the south side trailhead and working your way north to Hollywood Beach. Begin your journey near the South Shore Cultural Center. From here, you’ll walk along the shores of Lake Michigan through many of Chicago’s distinct neighborhoods. One of the things I love most about my city is how many diverse communities we have. While it’s impossible to cover all 77 of Chicago’s distinct neighborhoods in a day, you’ll get a true taste of the city on this lengthy hike. As you head north, you’ll see staple Chicago landmarks like Navy Pier , the Willis Tower (although I still call it the Sears Tower to this day), and Lincoln Park. I’ve been to a lot of places, and this trail never ceases to amaze me. There’s something about Chicago’s unbeatable architecture and lakeside views that I’ve never found anywhere else. As this is a true metropolis hike, there are many opportunities to refuel along the trail. Keep your eyes peeled for a little white camper from Heritage Bikes & Coffee. I’ve often found them camped out along this trail, serving up iced coffees and snacks for hungry wanderers. Additionally, the Chicago Lakefront Trail has designated bike paths if you decide you want to speed up your process and use a bike share service like Divvy. At the end of your hike, you’ll arrive at Ardmore Hollywood Beach. I still remember being shocked at how beautiful the sandy shores of this midwestern beach were the first time I went. The water tends to be calmer here than in the southern part of the city, making it a great option for paddle boarding, families, or anyone looking to chill on a floaty. Plus, the Uptown neighborhood is incredibly historic. It’s home to one of notorious gangster Al Capone’s favorite hangouts, the Green Mill Cocktail Lounge . There are many reasons to love the Second City, and the Chicago Lakefront Trail is one of those experiences that often leaves me thinking, “Wow, I’m so lucky to live here.” Strap on your hiking shoes, grab your swimsuit, and make the most of your Chicago summer.
