LYNCHBURG, Va. ( WDBJ /Gray News) – A bartender at a Texas Roadhouse in Lynchburg, Virginia is being credited with saving the life of a customer who was suffering from a medical emergency.

An ordinary shift at Texas Roadhouse on Sunday turned into a heroic evening for bartender Virginia Lewis, who used her paramedic experience to help save the customer’s life.

Lewis worked as a paramedic for 10 years before a career-ending injury led her to take a job at Texas Roadhouse.

She never knew her experience in the medical field would come in handy when a customer collapsed in the bathroom.

“I was over talking to a table, and I heard somebody yell my name, and then I heard multiple people across the restaurant started yelling my name,” Lewis said. “Another co-worker comes up to me at the table and he was like, ‘Virginia, we have an emergency in the bathroom. Like, we need you right away.’”

Lewis’ training quickly kicked in.

“That’s when my EMT skills came into play. We laid her on her side. Eventually, I looked for a pulse. Her pulse was very faint. I started to do a sternal rub and then she started to come around after about a minute or two of seizing,” Lewis said.

The former EMT had the woman drink some orange juice in case the episode was due to low blood sugar.

“At that point, she was coming around and she knew that she had fallen,” she added.

Lewis said it felt good to help a stranger and put her medical skills to good use.

“I just wanted to give her a hug and let her know that there are people out there that care. And there are people out there that want to make a difference in people’s lives and want to try to better the world,” she said.

Lewis said the woman was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital and was stable as of Sunday evening. She’s hoping to reunite with the woman so she can check in on her and make sure she’s OK.
