If there's one thing almost every Arizonan has noticed, it's rising costs at the grocery store .

Since 2020, food prices have risen by almost 25%, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

It's been a tough few years for the global supply chain, which faced major disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Russian invasion of Ukraine, a major producer of grains and sunflower oil, has led to rising food costs worldwide. Arizonans have also certainly seen the effect of the outbreak of bird flu on the cost of eggs at their local grocery store.

But rising grocery prices affect residents in some states more than others. A recent study from WalletHub analyzed the states where shoppers spend the highest percentage of their income on groceries. Here's what it found.

How much are Arizonans spending on groceries?

WalletHub analyzed the prices of 26 items, including meat, dairy, produce and cleaning products, and compared that with the median monthly income in the state.

Arizona ranked right in the middle of the pack at No. 20. The study found that groceries cost 2.04% of Arizonans' median monthly income. Groceries in Mississippi took up the largest share of people's incomes at 2.64%. Other Southern states, such as West Virginia, Arkansas and Kentucky, followed. New Jersey claimed the title of lowest share, at 1.5%.

The states where people spend the largest percentage of their income aren't those with the highest grocery prices, said Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst, in the study.

"The median incomes in these states are quite low, so even with reasonable grocery prices, residents end up shelling out a higher percentage of their earnings than people in states with more expensive products," Lupo said.
