A Jacksonville neighborhood diner best known for its jumbo pork tenderloin sandwich as well as homestyle fresh-from-scratch Blue Plate specials, plans to close. Mady’s will shut its doors at the end of service on May 23 after a decade serving breakfast, lunch and dinner at 948 Cesery Blvd. in Arlington. Saying it was with "heartfelt gratitude and sadness," the beloved restaurant announced its pending closure in a May 15 social media post and thanked its customers whom it said became family. "After 10 incredible years, it’s time for us to say goodbye. We are endlessly thankful for your support, your kindness, and the friendships that have become like family. Mady’s has been more than just a diner — it’s been a community, and that’s because of you," Mady's posted on Facebook. The diner's owner couldn't be reached immediately for comment. An old school, mom-and-pop-style diner , Mady's offered "home-cooked meals at a fair price." Leading the menu was its hand-cut, hand-pounded and breaded fried pork tenderloin that eclipsed its sesame-seed bun and filled the plate, leaving little room for homemade potato salad or other sides. Daily Blue Plate specials were hand-written on a menu board. They ranged from meatloaf on Monday to a fried pork chop on Tuesday, smothered chicken on Wednesday, roast pork and dressing on Thursday and salmon patties with dill sauce on Friday. Other customer favorites included the open-faced roast beef sandwich, half-pound Mady's Big Burger and fried bologna with cheese sandwich. After 4 years, farewell: Avondale restaurant closes abruptly. Could something new replace it? The diner opened in July 2015 in the roughly 2,292 square foot building dating back to 1947, according to state restaurant licensing and Duval County property records. Over the years, Mady's became a favorite of neighborhood residents, first responders, and former Midwesterners hankering for a fried breaded pork tenderloin sandwich and other tastes of home, Facebook posts showed. Longtime guests responded on social media to the closure announcement with surprise and dismay but also posted memories of their favorite meals and wished the owner a happy, well-deserved retirement. "There's no other restaurant in town like Mady's. It's so special, and the food has always been great!! My heart is sad to see you close. …Thank you so much for all your hard work, wonderful food, and great memories. God bless and keep you, " one customer posted. Another posted: "Oh no !!!!! I'm in conflicted feelings, I'm happy your [sic] getting a most deserved rest after going 90 mph for so many years but sad because as far as I'm concerned, there's no place left to go for quality "comfort food" AND at a more than reasonable price,,,,, now, I don't there will be a place I can go. This is epic." The closure comes about 10 months after a massive tree limb crashed through the dining room roof, forcing the diner to close temporarily for repairs.
