A borough mother has voiced her frustration over what she describes as "despicable" treatment by health services that has left her 13-year-old daughter facing surgery. Meryem Kartti’s daughter, Razane, developed a noticeable lump on her eyelid in October last year. Concerned, Ms Kartti took her daughter to their GP at Fairfax Group Practice in Prestwich. “They told us to just use a hot compress,” she said. “We did everything they said, but it didn’t help at all.” After multiple visits to the GP with no improvement, the family was directed to an optician. Ms Kartti said: “They did a full eye test, which wasn’t necessary, gave her a prescription that didn’t make sense, and sold us an eye make-up remover for £12, claiming it contained antibiotics – which it didn’t." Eventually, they were referred to an ophthalmologist followed by a video consultation appointment with Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. It was during that call that Ms Kartti was told her daughter may now need surgery under general anaesthetic – something she believes could have been avoided entirely. “I spoke to a pharmacy in Casablanca, where my family live, and they said a cream should have been prescribed in the first few days – it’s a simple issue of a blocked oil gland,” she said. While the lump is not painful, it affects Razane’s vision, and Ms Kartti says she is furious that what could have been a straightforward treatment has now become a surgical concern. She said: “It's unacceptable. My daughter was failed at every step, and now she faces the risk of surgery because proper care wasn’t given early on. She could end up with a scar.” Dr Charles Philbin, partner at Fairfax Group Practice, said: “We are unable to comment on individual cases in line with our duty to protect patient confidentiality. We have a robust complaints process and take all complaints very seriously.” A spokesperson for Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, said: "We acknowledge the concerns raised by Ms. Kartti. "Manchester Royal Eye Hospital strives to deliver timely and effective treatment, and we understood how important it was for Razane to see an ophthalmologist and accelerated the process to ensure she was seen much sooner than is typical. "Delivering excellent patient care is our utmost priority, and we take all feedback seriously to continue to improve our services."
