WASHINGTON, D.C. (WIFR/ WEEK ) - Illinois 16th District Rep. Darin LaHood says he hopes Gov. JB Pritzker’s meeting on Capitol Hill Thursday pushes him to enforce federal immigration laws. On June 12, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker testified in a House committee hearing on immigration policy, and among those asking questions was Illinois Republican Congressman Darin LaHood. The congressman asked Pritzker why he stands behind sanctuary policies and cited several publicized instances of Illinoisans being killed by undocumented immigrants. Although not a member of the committee, LaHood was granted a waiver to speak. He said he believes it is in the state’s best interest to end the policies, which is why he felt compelled to join the hearing. “People are sick and tired of the sanctuary city policies, and they’re sick and tired of the crime that is being committed by illegal migrants who shouldn’t be here. But they’re welcomed into the city of Chicago and other parts of the state under these policies,” LaHood remarked. The two main sanctuary policies in Illinois are the TRUST Act and the VOICES Act . The first blocks local police from helping with immigration enforcement, while the second protects undocumented immigrants who want to tell police they’ve been the victim of a crime, such as human trafficking, by letting them apply for certain types of visas so they can help police with the case.
